Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier: The Farmer's Daughter

Until the later 1700's, humans did not really understand that air contained oxygen which is necessary for life, and that burning was a process by which materials was oxidized. Lavoisier, a French chemist, designed experiments in which oxidation occurred and all of the byproducts were collected so they could be accurately measured.
